Urban Land Use Planning

Associate Professor Prasanna Divigalpitiya

Cities are constantly changing because of changing urban demography, changing lifestyles, and economic activities. The focus of our research is on studying changing urban land-use needs and how to develop sustainable, livable cities by integrating land use, transportation, and urban activities. We call this integrated approach to urban sustainability “habitat engineering.” Our research covers a wide range of topics on urban land uses and urban living. Our main interest is in the spatial organization of land use, transportation, activities, and people. Therefore, our research uses spatial analysis techniques to uncover urban issues and propose solutions. The following list covers recent research topics we are working on at our laboratory.

My classes discuss strategies for urban land use efficiency. The goal of this class is to learn how to embed climate change considerations into urban planning and design while ensuring a high quality of life for urban residents. We are discussing themes such as integrated climate strategies, efficient urban systems, building form and layout, vegetative cover, and the long-term consequences of urban land use strategies.

Main Research Topic

  1. Measuring urbanization and simulating future urbanization patterns
  2. Integration of land-use and transportation in urban planning, specifically: transit-oriented development, 15-minute city
  3. Economic and social needs of urban spaces in rapidly growing cities
  4. Strategies for urban land use efficiency: embed climate change considerations into urban planning and design while ensuring a high quality of life for urban residents.
