Timber Structure

Associate Professor Toshiaki Sato

The laboratory works on the research about structures constructed by timber members. The timber, which has sustainability of stable supply, has been used for buildings since a long time ago, and the future demand is expected. However, the behavior of timber cannot be predicted precisely, because the timber has complex characteristic, which is anisotropy, nonlinearity, inhomogeneous material and so on. In order to improving the safety of timber structure, it is necessary to keep a continuous research. For the purpose of providing reliable space, We deal with basic research for timber and technological development of timber structure.

Main Research Topic

  1. Studies on long-term safety assessments of wooden structures with the consideration of viscoelasticity of wood that changes due to surrounding environments
  2. Studies on frictional property of wooden surfaces with the purpose of assessment of a discontinuous wooden structure connection
  3. Studies on assessment in strength and rigidity of wooden materials with a large section and wooden materials with the consideration of disadvantages such as knots
  4. Studies on the development of seismic isolation and response control techniques for timber-frame residential buildings and the construction of seismic design methods
  5. Engineering development of connection and structure frame for middle and large-scale wooden structures
