In the Sustainable Design Camp 2026, the theme was “Reimagining Fukuoka’s Urban Waterfront” and the objective was to propose methods and designs for the seaside area and the river, particularly in the eastern part of Hakata Bay. Participants developed design proposals that enhance safety, resilience, accessibility, environmental sustainability, and the overall quality of public space.

59 students from nine universities were divided into nine groups of diverse backgrounds and nationalities to collaborate on creating urban design ideas, compile their proposals through Desk Critiques, and present them in the Final Presentation.

During the workshop, Summer School lectures by professors from the participating universities were held at the same time, and many participants attended. Participants explored the challenges and potentials of the waterfront from multiple perspectives by undertaking a building assessment assignment for the first time using “ThermalOne,” an architectural thermal environment simulation software developed by the Ozaki Laboratory at Kyushu University, as well as an on-site visit and discussion.
